Omaha has often been called the “action game.” Indeed, on the cover of his book Omaha Poker, Bob Ciaffone includes the phrase “the action game” as a reference to the way the game tends to encourage players to gamble it up. Looking back at the history of Omaha, the game was first introduced in the early 1980s as a variation of hold’em. In fact, the idea for Omaha was borne from a desire to create more action by giving players four hole cards instead of two (like in hold’em) which combined with the community cards could make a five-card poker hand.
